There are plenty of initiatives underway to move serverless computing into new places in various parts of the IT sector. While some companies are struggling to adapt to this change, several clear leaders have emerged:
- Cloudflare Workers, with automatic scaling and a high-performance global network
- CockroachDB, with a serverless database designed for speed and scale
- Vercel, which provides an easy way to run serverless functions alongside your static websites.
kubernetes becoming more accessible and facing more competition
Kubernetes still sits on the container orchestrator throne for now, but it has some serious competition:
- Nomad from HashiCorp, which lets you orchestrate containers plus a range of additional application executables
- OpenNebula, a powerful and user-friendly open-source cloud and edge computing platform.

With serverless and Kubernetes gaining more popularity, many organizations are in a place where they need to adapt. We'll need to rethink and restructure how we manage our stateful workloads and databases. These kinds of environments put observability (logs, metrics, and tracing) in focus.
